Educating Arizona's Judicial Community on Addiction and Youth Brain Development

AzSAM partnered with the Arizona Judicial Conference to deliver 'The Science Behind the Sentence: Addiction, Adolescent Brain Development, and Youth Justice' — a session for judges, court administrators, probation professionals, and other justice-system stakeholders on the neuroscience of addiction and the developing brain.

Substance use disorders frequently intersect with Arizona's justice system, making it essential for judges and court professionals to understand the science behind addiction. Research shows that addiction is a chronic medical condition that alters brain function and that adolescents are particularly vulnerable because their brains continue developing into early adulthood. Early substance use can significantly impact judgment, decision-making, and long-term health outcomes. To help bridge the gap between neuroscience and judicial practice, AzSAM partnered with the Arizona Judicial Conference to provide educational programming for judges, court administrators, probation professionals, and other justice-system stakeholders. During the 2026 conference, AzSAM leaders presented The Science Behind the Sentence: Addiction, Adolescent Brain Development, and Youth Justice, highlighting the neurobiology of addiction, the unique effects of substance use on the developing brain, and evidence-based approaches that support rehabilitation and recovery. This initiative reflects AzSAM's commitment to bringing addiction medicine expertise beyond traditional healthcare settings and into Arizona's courts, helping decision-makers better understand the medical and developmental factors that influence substance use disorders and youth justice outcomes.
